Purpose
Empower the next generation of babysitters with our Babysitter’s Training course! Designed for youth
ages 11-16, this program builds the skills and confidence to care for children and infants safely and
responsibly.
Prerequisites
None. Recommended age 11–16 years.
Learning Objectives
• Build important skills such as leadership, role modeling, discovering motivation,
communication, taking action and decision making.
• Identify ways to respect family culture and diversity among the children they babysit.
• Apply the FIND decision-making model to common babysitting situations.
• Use safe and appropriate techniques for finding babysitting jobs.
• List good business practices and professional work behaviors for babysitting.
• Enhance safety at home by spotting potential issues, learning how to prevent them, and quickly
taking action to ensure a safe environment.
• Identify which behaviors to expect from children based on their ages and developmental stages.
• Describe the importance of play for children’s growth and development.
• List and apply appropriate techniques to encourage positive behavior, provide positive
reinforcement, and correct negative behavior.
• Name at least three types of basic child care.
• Recognize an emergency.
• Identify and apply the emergency action steps: CHECK—CALL—CARE.
• Explain the differences between life-threatening and non-life-threatening emergencies.
• Identify who to call and when to call in different emergency situations.
• Describe how to check a conscious child or infant.
• Explain how to care for bleeding and burns.
• Describe the proper hand washing technique.
• Demonstrate how to properly remove disposable gloves.
• Demonstrate these caregiving skills:
o Pick up and holding an infant and toddler
o Bottle-feed an infant
o Spoon-feed an infant or toddler
o Diaper an infant or toddler
o Help a conscious child or infant who is choking
o Check an unconscious child or infant
o Give care to an unconscious child or infant who is not breathing.
o Control external bleeding

Certification Requirement
• Attend all class sessions.
• Participate in all skill sessions, discussions and activities.
• Demonstrate competency in all observable skills.
